Methods and Techniques
READING
For grades K-12 our reading instruction is aligned with the Common Core standards. For reading instruction our technique is based on creating instruction that mimics New York State and other state English Language Arts exams. For example, if the typical 6th grade NYS Reading exam contains reading comprehension passages of 750 words, we create reading assignments that mimic the actual test in structure, organization and task.
We also differentiate the task based on the child’s current reading level and current reading stamina. For example, a reluctant reader would receive an assignment of 200 words instead of 750 words.. Text length and complexity is increased as the student progresses.
We also provide multi-sensory support such as video and audio support of reading texts. Of the executive functioning supports provided, instruction is provided in organization, self monitoring, and time management. By differentiating instruction based on the unique needs of the student, all our students have the opportunity to gain mastery of content.
For our early learners, instruction is based on the Orton Gillingham method of reading which outlines a research based method of phonics instruction.

MATH
We provide math instruction that aligns with the Common Core standards. Our math basics classes are focused on students obtaining mastery of basic math skills (addition, subtraction, division, multiplication, fractions and decimals) and then moving on to more advanced math skills. We provide instruction in computation and generalizing computation skills to word problems. Explicit instruction is provided in mathematics academic vocabulary. For example, words like “product”, “quotient" and “sum" are taught so that students will gain mastery in solving math word problems. Our technique is based on creating instruction that mimics New York State math exams in structure and complexity. Our goal is for students to be completely familiar with New York State and other state math exams before they take the actual test.
